Our annual Holiday Show was a huge success! Our students’ performances were absolutely wonderful! Thank you to our parent volunteers for their hard work and dedication. Special thanks to Mme Leah, our music teacher. We are very proud!

This time of the year is not easy for everyone, therefore our students participate in several fund raisers to help the less forunate. We are thankful to our families as we have collected $450 from our bake sale for CHEO. On December 1st, we held our annual Skate-A-Thon, in which funds were also raised for CHEO. Our student council has been busy, organising the food train for the Caldwell Family Centre. We are also having our annual raffle sale of a wonderful basket, funds will be donated to CHEO. But that’s not all ! This year, our student council has decided to also donate to Toy Mountain, by raising money binhosting a school pyjama day for the cost of $2. Afterwards, the student council members purchased gifts. Finally, an important fund raiser for CHEO was suggested by a student, and that is to sell popcorn to all students on Fridays ! This is a pleasant way to raise funds while enjoying a healthy snack . As you can see, we will be very busy during the next few weeks. We would like to thank our families for their support and generosity in helping everyone have wonderful holidays.

The Phases of the Moon

Students from the grade 6 class explored the phases of the moon by using “Oreo” cookes. This was not only a great learning experience, but a delicious one too!

Carrot Mummification

After 40 days and 40 nights, students from the grade 4 class opened their sarcophagus to examine the carrots they had mummified. Here are the results!

Mathletics

Mathletics is a virtual community of thousands of students throughout the world. The Maple Leaf Math Challenge is the Canadian component. Westboro students have access to the website from October 31 to Nov. 9. A log-in name and password gives each student unlimited access where (s)he can challenge him/herself or compete against same-grade students from across Canada. The Mathletics activities can be accessed from either home of school.

The Reproduction of a Wendat Village

The grade 6 students explored the culture of the Iroquois people, specifically the Wendat (Hurons), who lived north of Lake Ontario.

Working together, the students had to build a replica of a Wendat Village.

Eastern Ontario Elementary School X-C Championships.

A special congratulations to S. and P. from grade 3 who participated in the Elementary Cross Country Running Championships at Money’s Bay on Saturday October 22.

There were approximately 22 elementary schools from Ottawa and surrounding areas represented at this meet.

In the 8 and 9 your old boys division, there were 75 students entered in the 2km race.

Our athletes finished with a strong performance and should be very proud of their accomplishments!

Science, science and more science!

Our grade 6 students were enthusiastic surgeons, during the dissection of a fish, as they studied, discovered and identified its organs.

Our grade 2 students discovered how polar bears keep their warm body heat in the Arctic.

The Mummification of a Carrot!

Grade 4 students were busy discovering the wonders of ancient Egypt. While exploring this beautiful civilisation, they learned to write using hieroglyphics as well as work with papyrus. Of course, a study of ancient Egypt would not be complete without the mummification of a carrot! Each student covered a carrot in natron (a mixture of baking soda and salt) and placed it in a sarcophagus for 40 days and 40 nights. On November 15^th, the sarcophagus will be opened to examine the carrot. We will soon be ending our wonderful journey in Egypt to explore the fascinating ancient Greek civilization.
