On May 27th, Westboro Academy held its annual science fair for grades 1 -6. Twenty scientists from across Ottawa attended the event as did family and friends. A myriad of topics were explored and presented by grade 3 – 6 students, including Taste Buds, Hovercrafts, Robots, The Eye and DNA. Grades 1 and 2 displayed class projects and some children also chose to present an individual project of their own. Thanks to our budding scientists, we learned about topics ranging from birds to florescence. The science fair was competitive for grade 6 students. Each student was judged by 2 scientists and an average of the grade was obtained to award prizes to the top 3 projects. Donations were graciously offered by the Museum of Civilization, the Canadian War Museum, the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Canada Science & Technology Museum, the National Gallery of Canada and the Putting Edge. Well-deserved congratulations go out to all participants for their outstanding effort and enthusiasm in teaching their peers about their chosen topic

On May 28th, as part of our science curriculum, students from grades 2 and 4 released 50 Painted Lady butterflies in the Brewer Park area following a 3 week in-class observation involving the metamorphosis of this butterfly species.

The Painted Lady butterfly is probably the most common butterfly in the world. These butterflies can be seen between March and October. Painted Lady Butterflies (and all butterflies) need the sun to fly. The upper surface of the wings is mostly black, brown and orange. The underside of the wings is grey with white and red markings. Did you know that these butterflies see a wider range of colour and more shades of green than people do?
