In September 2005, Westboro Academy launched an intermediate division to provide family-oriented, quality education from JK to Grade 8.

The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life. Plato (427 BC - 347 BC), The Republic

The staff and students of Westboro Academy personify Excellence, Integrity, and Respect. The curriculum intertwines with these three major tenets to define its objectives as:

  • Strong academic programs developing cognitive, physical and affective growth and love for learning

  • Community involvement both within the school and within the community

  • Personal development: social skills, leadership skills, life skills

The intermediate division program follows the Quebec Curriculum for French language arts and the Ontario Curriculum for the balance of the program. Français/drame, histoire, géographie are taught in French while English/drama, math, science/technology, physical education and art are taught in English. Spanish language instruction and an instrumental music program are offered as well.

The program emphasizes critical thinking, problem solving, strong study skills and all curriculum areas are applied to today’s world and our society by direct links to current events: locally, nationally and internationally. Students need to complete both short-term and long-term independent studies to promote autonomous inquiry into areas of interest. All curriculum areas are tied to technology to either garner information or to present findings and/or projects. Access to a home computer is an essential program component. As program requirements are stringent, time-management/organizational skills are taught and practiced.

Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not. Thomas H. Huxley (1825 - 1895)

“It takes a community to raise a child,” and collaboration between home and school is imperative to ensure a collegial advocacy for each child’s development. Parental involvement is supported by a website dedicated to the intermediate program. This site contains news, homework, study supports and links to articles and websites. The website does not contain any identifiable reference to individuals; as such, open e-mail contact and telephone is the ongoing mode of parent/teacher contact.

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC)

Although most learning will take place within the classroom, the curriculum has been adapted to take advantage of Westboro Academy’s natural setting. Physical Education is outside whenever possible using the nearby rinks, pool, tennis courts, bike paths, walkways and fields. Mathematics investigations and science observations and experiments use the school’s surroundings whenever possible. The abundant resources of the Nation’s Capital and the National Capital Region are used for frequent field trips to make learning outcomes meaningful and their application concrete. Additionally, experts in a specific field will be invited to provide meaningful learning experiences within the classroom.

The extension of Westboro Academy’s tradition of excellence to the middle-school grades offers a unique educational opportunity. The site, the school’s harmony, and its tradition supported by the teachers' educational expertise, enthusiasm and dedication make Grades 7 and 8 a remarkable experience for those wishing a bilingual education.
